Alternatives to Chemical Drain Cleaner

A clogged drain, whether it’s in your sink or your shower is always a frustrating experience. When faced with frustration, it’s easy to reach for the easiest and fastest solution, which in this case are chemical drain cleaners. However, how convenient is a solution that will likely end in disaster? If not now, then in the not so distant future.

To keep it straight forward, chemical drain cleaners are bad for your plumbing, to learn more about them, check out this blog post: Why You Should Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners.

If you want to prevent costly repairs, you need to throw away your chemical products and stick to alternative methods. When you have a clogged drain or pipe, the following methods are safer for your home. For serious problems, a professional plumber can help you get everything back to working order again.

Finding an Alternative

Chemical drain cleaners work by causing a chemical reaction in your pipes. This reaction actually creates heat which is what melts the clog, but it can also cause corrosion. If the clog is made of fat, oil or grease, the heat will not actually destroy it. Instead, the heat will just move the clog even farther down your pipes.

If you want to safely, effectively unclog your drains, you need to find an alternative option. These natural alternatives may take a little longer than chemicals do, but they are significantly safer.

Drain Snakes

A drain snake can be up to 25 feet in length, which is easily long enough for your sink. If you have a drain snake available, you can quickly, naturally get rid of an annoying clog. It’s also pretty satisfying seeing all of the gunk pulled from the drain, even if it is slightly disgusting too.

Vinegar and Baking Soda

Make your own drain cleaning solution! Blend baking soda and vinegar together in a 1:1 ratio. Then, pour a cup of this mixture into the drain. Let it sit for one hour before you pour boiling water down your drain.

Sink plungers aren’t the most efficient method for unclogging your drains, and can actually be dangerous for you to use if you’ve used chemical drain cleaners in the past. They usually spray some material out of the drain and some of that could make contact with your skin. So while they might be better in terms of not damaging your pipes, we would recommend one of the other methods.

If none of these tactics work for you, then you might be dealing with a major issue. When you have an impossibly difficult clog, High 5 Plumbing can help. Call us today to find out how our experienced plumbers can solve your problems!
