How to Fix a Clogged Drain

Clogged drains inevitably happen in every home. Once a drain problem has begun, it will only get worse over time. As such, it is important to act promptly, preferably as soon as you realize that water isn’t draining as it should.

Here are 3 easy ways to fix a clogged drain.

Use a plunger

Every homeowner should keep a plunger handy as it helps clear clogs from most fixtures. This is the first tool you should reach for when trouble arises.

Fill the sink, tub or toilet with enough water to cover the head of the plunger. Work the plunger up and down several times while keeping its head submerged. This will send enough pressure down the drain to loosen the obstruction. If the plunger doesn’t clear the drain after multiple attempts, try using a drain snake.

The design of the drain, as well as the location and nature of the blockage will determine the success of using a plunger. This method usually has a low success rate when dealing with clogged shower drains, especially if the clog is deep and made of hair.

Use a drain snake

A drain snake is a long, flexible rope with coiled wire at the end. This is especially beneficial for snagging or cutting through the source of the clog. It may be a low-tech piece of equipment, but it does wonders in dislodging clogs. It is usually reserved for difficult clogs that cannot be loosened by a plunger.

Push the snake down the drain until you feel resistance. Rotate the drain snake as it moves through the pipe. This will either break up or pierce through the obstruction.

Pour hot water down the drain

This is the easiest and most affordable method of unclogging the drain. It may partially clear the blockage by breaking down some grease or soap that is holding the clog together.  But if you’re dealing with a serious blockage, this method may not work.  Unclogging serious drains can be solved by using a combination of these methods.

If you have tried the methods listed above, but you still haven’t dislodged the clog, chances are you may have a deep clog somewhere. In this case, it is best to turn over the job to a professional plumber. Give the experts at High 5 Plumbing a call!
