How to Locate Your Home's Water Shut-Off Valve

In a plumbing emergency, it is crucial to know where your main shut-off valve is. Knowing where this important feature is to your Denver home is, could mean a difference between a plumbing nightmare or a plumbing disaster.

The following list gives you several situations in which it will be important for you to know where your home’s main shut-off valve is before an emergency occurs. More importantly, we will teach you how to shut it off.

Different Types of Water Valves

We would first like to start by saying that there are two different types of valves.

  1. The fixture valves; and
  2. The main water valve to your homes water supply.

The difference between these two valves is that fixture valves are near the fixtures themselves. The main water valve is usually outside the home in a crawl space, underground in the front of your home where the front yard meets the street, or in the basement.

Fixture Valve Shut-Off

If you are experiencing a leak from your toilet, kitchen sink, bathroom sink or another area where there is a fixture, here is what you should do:

  1. Locate the valve (usually coming out of the wall behind the fixture) and turn it clockwise, to the right, to turn it off
  2. After the fixture valve is off the fixture should stop leaking or seeping water
  3. If water continues to leak from the area, then the issue could be a leaking or burst pipe. In this case, you will want to shut off your home’s main water supply.

Main Water Supply Shut-Off

It is important to note that the location of your main valve varies depending on the age of your home and local building codes. The easiest way to find the main shut-off valve is knowing whether your Denver home was constructed on:

  • A slab;
  • A basement; or
  • A crawl space.

Once you find it you will want to turn this valve clockwise to turn off your main water supply.
