Plumbing Tips Every Homeowner Should Know

As a Denver homeowner, you have responsibilities. If something goes wrong, chances are you need to call a professional. However, not everything that happens requires professional help. At High 5 Plumbing, we care about your investment. That’s why we have outlined 4 ways you can prevent plumbing problems in your home before they become plumbing disasters. Read on to find out 4 ways to save your plumbing system before a small issue becomes your worst nightmare.

Kitchen Sink Back Up

A common problem in the kitchen is a backed-up sink. With so many items like food particles, oil from food, grease, random food crumbs, and food prep remnants, the sink takes a toll. If you notice your sink backing up, run hot water down the drain for a few minutes to loosen up anything that’s blocking the drain. You can also use a long-handled spoon or tongs to try and get whatever is out of the drain, out. Then run the disposal to see if that pushes the clog out. If you still have an issue, try using a plunger to loosen up the blockage.

Running Toilet

A running toilet could mean the stopper is old and needs replacing. To check this, take the toilet lid off the back of the toilet and see if the stopper is loose. If it is, you will have to manually place the water stopper over the uptake valve until you get a new one. A more serious issue would be a leak or crack. To test for a leak, use 6 drops of food coloring in the tank. If there is a leak, the food coloring will be in the bowl within 30 minutes.

Garbage Disposal

Your garbage disposal takes a beating. Not a lot of people know what is safe to put down garbage disposals, and what to avoid. Things homeowners should never put down a drain are egg shells, coffee grinds, chicken bones, banana peels or porous vegetables (like carrots). They not only clog the drain but clog your disposal. Furthermore, turn on the disposal before you start adding food waste. Run cold water for a few seconds after to clear the drain and disposal of any lingering items as well.

Sink Drains

The sink drains in your home get a ton of use. Bathroom drains are easily clogged due to hair and soap debris. To prevent a clogged sink, keep the drain clear of hair, soap scum and other particles by keeping your countertops clean. Make sure every drain in your home has a strainer or stopper to prevent things from entering your pipes and creating a clog.
